More Rain Falling in Flooded S. Plains

“We’re going to go through some days of frustration; I know we’ll all pull together”

Flood-weary residents of Texas and Oklahoma had no reprieve Friday as more rain fell in a region where two weeks of storms have swollen rivers and lakes beyond their limits.

Thousands have been forced from their homes, though some residents were holding out, saying conditions are no worse than floods they’ve weathered before.

A state of emergency was in place for Oklahoma, and flood watches and warnings were posted. A flood watch was in effect for large portions of Texas, where the storms have been blamed for at least 11 deaths. Read more

Stalled system caused heavy rainfall

The days-long storm system that has caused a series of major floods combines elements of a spring storm with a summer storm, said Alan Moller, meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

‘The astonishing thing about it is, it’s hardly moving,’ Moller said.

The weak upper-level, low-pressure system has been lingering more than a week. Such storms typically pass through an area. Not this one. Winds are rotating counterclockwise around the system, hovering near Wichita Falls and southwest Oklahoma. Winds carrying moisture from the Gulf of Mexico collide with the cooler and drier rotating winds, producing heavy rain to the south and southeast of the system’s center. Read more
